Benefits of a Church Group Retreat
When a group takes time out for spiritual refreshment at a retreat, the entire church benefits. Here are a few things we've heard from other groups:
- We are renewed, refreshed and more able to see the larger picture of our relationships to self, others, church and God. Our souls receive the quiet, unhurried time needed to reconnect.
- Unity developed among those at the retreat spreads through the congregation as we return to fellowship. We get to know our church family in a richer way.
- Relationships are dealt with in a more positive and hopeful manner due to the chance to rest and find renewal in God.
- An element of fun comes from relaxing and taking ourselves less seriously.
- Revived and restored leaders are better prepared to encourage and minister.
Devoting time to get away and focus on God bears fruit in the lives of individuals and the church! We respond to a multitude of needs that often leave us feeling pulled in many directions. Un-fragmented time for discernment, fellowship, prayer and reflection helps us reconnect with God's presence in our lives so that we can prioritize in healthy ways. We are better able to see something of God in those we know, we are more courageous in finding our true voices, and are more dedicated to mission when living more authentically.
From our perspective at Transformations, our main objective is to eliminate all distractions from each and every guest to allow them the time, space and atmosphere to accomplish their goals. We want the rooms to be clean when you arrive, the meals to be hot and delicious, and your meeting room to be just what your group needs. Our staff has a heart for your ministry.
Some suggestions for the "issues" that arise.
Why should you go to retreat?
- Spiritual Refreshment. How long has it been since you were quiet before God?
- To get Acquainted. Do you really know the people in your Bible study group/men's group/senior's group/ladies fellowship group?
- To have Fun. How often do you get to really play?
- To Work. Is your choir ready for that first performance? Have your board members had time to have that crucial meeting? And don't forget the sacred work or prayer itself - it's incredibly refreshing to be able to get away and having nothing to focus on but the Lord.
How do we cover Sunday morning if many are on retreat for the weekend?
- One option is to retreat close to home so all can attend church on Sunday
- Bring in a special storyteller, speaker, or activity for the children
- Consolidate adult classes
- Pray for those who are on retreat
When the women/men are all gone for women's/men's retreats, how do we help the parent's left at home get the kids to church?
- Offer a continental breakfast at the church as a special event
- Organize carpools for anyone without transportation
How do we find childcare for over-nights?
- Develop in the congregation a sense of the value of retreats. Encourage those who stay home to see themselves as supporters of this effort.
- A parent left home with the children may want to get together with another similar family for activities and meals
- Have a church sponsored activity for children and those caring for them one afternoon (air zoo, museum, ball game, field trip, etc.) or have an event at the church (movie night, etc)
How do we plan a retreat? Just get started!
- Retreat planning isn't difficult, but is best done with at least six months (or more) lead time to secure a venue, set a theme, and plan the experience
- Work with congregational resources to determine your theme and how to make a superb, meaningful experience for those who come. Incorporate use of scripture, reflection, prayer and music. If you need assistance, our retreat center is able to provide guidance in these areas.
- Our retreat center can provide support functions like set-up, meal provision and clean-up, work.
- Know your group. Will those who attend be satisfied with the slumber sounds of double occupancy, or will they expect more privacy. Are they willing to share a bathroom?
- Will you need use of a chapel, break-out rooms, a/v equipment, a piano, or outdoor spaces during your retreat?
- Will parking and barrier free access be an issue both for your group members, and for the planners who might be bringing lots of materials?
- Insure participation by publicizing, cheerleading, and stressing the benefits of retreat to all in the congregation.
- Our center will work with you on planning the details. Have an idea of your schedule, and talk to your retreat center contact about making your event flow well so those who participate are not distracted by the details.
- Follow-up on the retreat with a survey. With permission, share testimonials from those who participated. Word of mouth from one retreat can be your best encouragement for the next!
