SELF-DEFEATING
BEHAVIOR
...WHO, ME?
Chances are, you
know someone, perhaps
yourself, who does things that put their goals in
jeopardy, things that clearly are not in their own best
interest. Why, oh why, would we do this to
ourselves?
We all hold certain ideas and mental filters that
influence our choices. Some of these are helpful and
benign while others are false and reach mythical
proportions. When these false ideas and attitudes
become pervasive, they result in repeated
self-defeating behaviors that take a significant toll
on our happiness and life satisfaction. Examples are
relationship difficulties, procrastination, perfectionism,
inferiority, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions and
excessive fear.
Over time, self-defeating behaviors become
deeply ingrained as we develop ways to minimize the
damaging consequences and fall into patterns of
denial. This makes self-defeating behaviors difficult
to dislodge on our own.
The January
13 “Eliminating Self-Defeating
Behaviors” workshop begins with information to help
us identify self-defeating behaviors in ourselves and
others, learn how we acquire them, and how we
perpetuate them. The afternoon segment provides
concise, practical clinical techniques to assist in
replacing self-defeating behaviors with more life-
generating behaviors and attitudes. The workshop will
be a combination of lecture, stories and a humorous
skit that brings the lessons home.
