Radical Amazement
by Judy Cannato

Beginning Tuesday, February 27 from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm, this evening, facilitated by Gertrude Maurer, SSJ will discuss the growing body of work focusing on the relationship between spirituality and modern science. In the introduction to Radical Amazement, Judy Cannato writes, paraphrasing St. Thomas Aquinas, that a mistake in our understanding of creation will necessarily cause a mistake in our understanding of God. Beginning with a brief history of the old cosmology, Cannato then introduces us to a wealth of new discoveries while relating each to traditional Christian teachings. This thoughtful, practical guide reveals the harmony of science and spirituality, inviting us to explore the connectedness of all creation.

Judy Cannato is an author, a retreat facilitator and spiritual director. She maintains an office at River’s Edge, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Cleveland, Ohio. She has been doing retreat ministry and spiritual direction for twenty years. The book is available from Transformations. Reading the first four chapters before the first session will provide for a more lively discussion.Three Tuesdays, February 27, March 13, March 27. $20 for all three sessions. Please register by February 19.

International Women's Day
Prayer Flags
International Women’s Day, first celebrated in 1909, is a major event in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are celebrated without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. On March 3, 2007 from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. we will explore past struggles and accomplishments and, more importantly, look ahead to the possibilities for future generations. To frame our project, we will explore the eight United Nations Millennium Goals, and reflect on how they impact the lives of women everywhere by creating prayer flags that symbolize our reflections, prayers and blessings. Cost for Blessings on the Breeze: Creating the Prayer Flags is $7 plus an optional $5 for a soup and bread “simple living” meal. Register by February 19.

Hannah McKinneyHannah McKinney will speak at Blessings in the World: Celebrating International Women’s Day on Tuesday evening, March 6, 2007 from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. McKinney is currently serving as mayor of Kalamazoo, Michigan and is a Professor of Economics and Business at Kalamazoo College. Her focus is in urban economics, urban planning and public finance. McKinney has also written a book entitled The Development of Local Public Services, 1650-1869: Lessons from Middletown, CT., published by Greenwood Press, 1995. She has also written several articles based on a community building project entitled the Convening Our Community that she codirected from 1999 to 2001. McKinney’s newest research efforts include work on the future of small metropolitan areas as well as work on a National League of Cities project that examines poverty alleviation measures in American cities.

Also this evening we will explore the United Nations Millennium Goals, and watch a short film to celebrate the lives of women. The prayer flags, designed the previous Saturday, will be dedicated and commissioned to circulate in the community. We will have a time to socialize accompanied by light refreshments to allow for lots of connecting— an activity that helps women support one another on the journey of life. Bring a friend. Free will offering. Event will be held in the Holy Family Chapel (use Transformations entrance). To help us anticipate the amount of food to provide, please register by March 1.
