"In order to find God in ourselves, we must stop
looking at ourselves, stop checking and verifying
ourselves in the mirror of our own futility, and be
content to be in Him and to do whatever He wills,
according to our limitations, judging our acts not in the
light of our own illusions, but in the light of His reality
which is all around us in the things and people we live
with."
- Thomas Merton in No Man is an Island
Thomas Merton was one of the most famous
American Roman Catholics of the 20th century. Born
to a well-traveled, artistic family, Merton gradually
shifted to Roman Catholicism from agnosticism and
chose to become a Cistercian monk for the discipline
of silence and solitude. His extensive writings
reached well beyond the monastery walls, and his
social criticisms on racism, economic injustice and
militarism burned deeply into the public awareness.
He was a pioneer in exploring the similarities
between Christian and Eastern mysticism. Fr. Patrick
Collins will lead an exploration of four major themes
from the extensive writings of Thomas Merton. They
are: the journey from false to true self, contemplation,
prayer, and silence and solitude. There will be
presentations, discussions and experiences of
contemplative prayer.
Thomas Merton
January 31, 1915-December 10, 1968
Thomas Merton was one of the most influential
Catholic authors of the 20th century. Following some
teaching at Columbia University Extension and at St.
Bonaventure's College, Olean, New York, Merton
entered the monastic community of the Abbey of
Gethsemani at Trappist, Kentucky. Merton was an
acclaimed Catholic theologian, poet, author and
social activist. He wrote over 50 books, scores of
essays and reviews, and is the ongoing subject of
countless biographies. Merton was also a proponent
of ecumenism, engaging in spiritual dialogues with
such icons as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Thich
Nhat Hanh and D.T. Suzuki.
Fr. Patrick W. Collins, Ph.D., is an outstanding author,
preacher, musician and university professor. He
senses that his principal vocation is to contemplative
living-out of which his various ministries flow. In
addition to numerous books and articles, Fr. Collins
has produced 45 TV programs, and a number of
videos, among them Thomas Merton: Man, Monk, Myth
with Music. Fr. Collins presents various kinds of
retreats, missions, and workshops, including what he
calls "spiritual concerts" which combine texts and
tunes for spiritual insight and growth. This approach
gives an emotional dimension to the meaning of the
words and connects head with heart, reason and
imagination. He calls it "Music with a Message."

Living
One Day at a Time in 12-Step Recovery - for
Women
Recovery is not a place, a destination to be reached. It
is a journey... a journey of hope, and healing, and
peace. An important key to progress on the path is to
take one step at a time... one day at a time. We'll
explore different ways to make this goal a reality each
day. This retreat is open to women from any 12-Step
recovery program.
Send a $55 non-refundable deposit by July 2 to
reserve your space at the discounted rate. The
balance is due on arrival, payable in cash or by check.
After July 2, the non-refundable deposit is increased to
$70 and must be received by July 23 to reserve your
space. In either case, a balance of $110 is due on
arrival, payable by check or cash. This includes
double occupancy, meals, snacks, materials and
retreat. Sandwiches will be provided on Friday night.
Pat Underwood, CSJ is a
Hazelden-trained, certified pastoral addiction
counselor who has been living a 12-Step spirituality
for more than 30 years. She is an excellent retreat
director with extensive experience in the special
challenges facing women in recovery.
